On the stage of Sofia Theatre, the eternal comedy “Inspector” by Gogol will be brought to life under the direction of Boiko Bogdanov so to succumb us to the amazing world of his plethora of characters where we can have a good laugh with their hilarious and sad individualities. A classical text that will live with the rhythm of the present day so that it can describe the eternal, reoccurring, hilarious and sad sides of life to us.
“The Government Inspector” by Gogol seems extremely contemporary to this day.
The moral decay and the crazed social life have gone so far that on the top of the pyramid of every social hierarchy we find a fantastic Hlestakov- wastrel and fool – ruling and harvesting.
In this situation, I am worried not so much by the shameless insolence of one criminal or another, of the classical arrogant empowered idiot but the readiness of the society to obey them and thus concluding a silent contract of mutual nuisance. I am afraid of the silence and even the initiative with which by seemingly closing our eyes we legalize, establish and solidify the models of manipulation, chameleon-like behavior, bribery, servility and in conclusion impunity of any evil…It is our common problem and by refusing to rise against it, we also give up our right to be unhappy with our lives becoming hard and unjust- we are its authors.
Entangled in the common spider’s web we create each other.
So: Who are we laughing at? Ourselves. Who makes us cry? We do…
